Job Description:
Overview:Responsible for the analysis of laboratory specimens
and subsequent result reporting according to laboratoryprotocol and
procedures.Responsibilities: Performs accurate and appropriate
testing of specimens received in the laboratory, according
toestablished laboratory protocol and procedures.? Evaluates
specimens for acceptability for proper testing.? Investigates and
documents problems with unacceptable specimens.? Organizes workload
for maximum efficiency in order to complete tests being performed.?
Accurately performs tests as requested on specimens received.?
Verifies accuracy of results before reporting results.Test Result
Reporting Reports test results in a timely manner and according to
established laboratory protocol andprocedures.? Reports results
within time limits established for test procedures.Reports results
for stats, abnormal, critical values, and other categories of
special requests asdefined by laboratory policy.? Documents special
handling required for test results that meet outlying (established)
criteria. Follows established procedures for laboratory quality
control and reports discrepancies to theappropriate supervisor.?
Performs appropriate quality control for the test procedure.?
Accurately analyzes and evaluates QC results obtained before
accepting and reporting patient test results.? Records results
obtained for quality control testing as defined in test procedure.?
Appropriately notifies supervisor of discrepant QC results.?

needed, maintenance on instruments and equipment asappropriate.
Performs calibration of equipment as required.? Performs
maintenance according to the schedule for the
instrument/equipment.? Documents performance of maintenance
procedures for the instrument/equipment.? Performs calibration of
equipment according to scheduled intervals or receipt of reagents.?
Documents calibration of equipment. Troubleshoots instruments,
equipment, reagents, and patient specimen's when problems
occur.Notifies the supervisor if unable to solve the problem.?
Follows established guidelines for troubleshooting procedures.?
Follows established guidelines for resolving patient specimen
problems.? Documents steps taken during the troubleshooting
process.? Immediately notifies supervisor when unable to solve
problems. Complies with established laboratory and hospital
policies for universal precautions and safetyprocedures. When
handling blood and/or body fluids, universal precaution procedures
will befollowed in order to minimize exposure to infectious
diseases. Safety policies and procedureswill be followed when using
chemicals.? Will wear lab coats, gloves, and protective devices as
required when handling specimens.? Will follow safety policies for
dress.? Will follow safety policies when using chemicals.? Will
report any safety hazards to the appropriate supervisor.? Will use
protective barrier equipment as required.? Will disinfect and clean
work benches/areas according to established protocol.? Will
properly dispose of contaminated and hazardous waste materials.
Performs phlebotomy (venipunctures, fingersticks, heelsticks) as
appropriate for the patientrequiring this procedure. When
requested, performs duties required for relief in higher
classification in supervisors absence. Attends all required safety
training programs and can describe his or her responsibilities
related togeneral safety, department/service safety, and specific
job-related hazards.? Attends all required safety education
programs.? Provides complete and accurate responses to safety
questions.? Operates assigned equipment and performs all procedures
in a safe manner as instructed.? Maintains work area and equipment
in the condition required by department standards.? Demonstrates
proper body mechanics in all functions.? If manager/leader,
provides for the safety of department employees. Follows the
hospital exposure control plans/bloodborne and airborne pathogens.?
Demonstrates knowledge of techniques, procedures, and correct use
of protective barrier equipment.? Ensures a safe environment by
complying with established procedures.? Attends annual education
programs. Demonstrates respect and regard for the dignity of all
patients, families, visitors, and fellowemployees to ensure a
professional, responsible, and courteous environment.? Interacts
with all of the above in a considerate, helpful, and courteous
manner, as observed by thesupervisor and peers.? Fosters mature

appropriate chain of command regarding issues.? Conducts all work

of all hospital and patient information at all times, as observed
by peers andmanagement.? Presents neat appearance in proper attire
and identification, as required by the position, department,and
policy.? Continuously displays a can do attitude within the
department and across departmental lines tocontribute to the
overall customer service program in place.? Will answer any ringing
telephone within three rings.Qualifications:Minimum Education ?
B.S. or B.A in Medical Technology/Clinical Laboratory Science
orequivalent.Minimum WorkExperienceMinimum 1-5 years experience as
a Clinical Laboratory Scientist in alicensed and accredited Acute
Care Facility preferred.RequiredLicenses/CertificationsCurrent
Clinical Laboratory Scientist license from the State of
CaliforniaDepartment of Health Services.Required Skills,Knowledge,
and AbilitiesPerforms laboratory test procedures in one or more
sections of the ClinicalLaboratory, using good judgment and
independent actions. Have goodcommunication skills and the ability
to effectively provide customer serviceto all customers. Extended
duty and on-call may be required as needed.
