Job Title Bilingual Medical Assistant Spanish Speaking Department Clinical Services Immediate Supervisor Title Physician Office Manager Clinical Services Manager Clinic Area Supervisor or other designated medical personnel Job Supervisory Responsibilities Medical assistants may assume the duties of the office manager with other staff to supervise and become the clinical manager of the physicians back office and laboratory General Summary A nonexempt position responsible for performing a variety of duties depending on whether it is an onsite clinic or near site clinic They may be involved in both the clinical and administrative areas including assisting physicians with patient care and handling clerical environmental and organizational tasks Provides information to patients so they may fully utilize and benefit from the clinical services Essential Job Responsibilities Fulfills patient care responsibilities as assigned that may include checking schedules and organizing patient flow; accompanying patients to examprocedure room; assisting patients as needed with walking transfers dressing collecting specimens preparing for exam etc; collecting patient history; performing screenings per provider guidelines; assisting physiciansnurses with various procedures; charting; relaying instructions to patientsfamilies; answering calls and providing pertinent informationFulfills clerical responsibilities as assigned that may include sendingreceiving patient medical records; obtaining labX ray reports hospital notes referral information etc; completing formsrequisitions as needed; scheduling appointments; verifying insurance coverage and patient demographics; managing and updating charts to ensure that information is complete and filed appropriatelyFulfills environmental responsibilities as assigned that may include setting up instruments and equipment according to department protocols; cleaning examprocedure rooms instruments and equipment between patient visits to maintain infection control; cleaning sterilizer according to scheduled maintenance program and keeping appropriate records; ordering sorting storing supplies; and restocking examprocedure roomsFulfills organizational responsibilities as assigned including respectingpromoting patient rights; responding appropriately to emergency codes; sharing problems relating to patients andor staff with immediate supervisorFulfills clinical medical assisting responsibilities that vary according to state law which may include medicalsurgical asepsis sterilization instrument wrapping and autoclaving; checking vital signs or mensurations; physical examination preparations; clinical pharmacology; drug administration through various routes including injections; prescription verifications with physicians orders; minor surgery assists including surgical tray set up prepost surgical care applying dressings and suture removal; biohazard waste disposal and monitoring; therapeutic modalities; instructing patients with assistive devices body mechanics and home care; laboratory procedures including Occupational Safety and Health Administration OSHA guidelines; quality control methods; CLIA waived testing; capillary punctures and venipuncture; specimen handling such as urine throat vaginal stool and sputum; electrocardiography including mounting emergency triage and first aid Medical assistants must adhere to the MA scope of practice in the laboratoryOther duties as assignedMinimum Qualifications Education High school diploma or general equivalency diploma GED Registered or Certified Medical Assistant diploma from an accredited vocational institution or a community college course in medical assisting is required Certification in phlebotomy is required Years of experience may be considered as a substitution for certificationregistration if approved by hiring Director Experience For CertifiedRegistered Medical Assistant Minimum one year of recent experience working in an internal medicine pediatric or a family practice medical facility as a medical assistant is strongly preferred Minimum of two years administrative experience or equivalent in a service business setting is preferred Electrocardiogram EKG vital signs venipuncture capillary and injection current experience required For non CertifiedRegistered Medical Assistant Minimum 5 years of recent experience working in a medical facility as a medical assistant Electrocardiogram EKG vital signs venipuncture capillary and injection current experience required Other Requirements Current documentation of a national certification for the registered medical assistant RMA through the American Medical Technologists AMT or for the certified assistant through the American Association of Medical Assistants AAMA Must possess a current CPR certification and current health records with the appropriate immunizations to work in the health care field hepatitis B and tuberculosis Attendance and Expected Hours of Work Regular attendance and timeliness of arrival of shift at assigned location is required Schedule is based on operational need Ability to provide own transportation to the reporting locations Ability to work at multiple locations upon the business need Physical Requirements Ability to lift pull push manipulate equipment and patients which requires strength gross motor and fine motor coordination Ability to administer prescribed treatments Ability to perform CPR and venipuncture Ability to sit andor stand for long periods of time Ability to operate an automobile computer Ability to climb stairs Interpersonal SkillsAbility to relate cooperatively and constructively with patients families significant others co workers administration other hospital departments physicians community agencies third party payers referral sources regulators and other health team members Ability to constructively supervise others Ability to enlist the cooperation of others High tolerance for stress Essential Mental AbilitiesAbility to exercise independent judgment Self directing and organized Ability to reason objectively Ability to assess project and plan for patients needs Ability to interpret state federalagency regulations Ability to document concisely accurately and timely Ability to handle a variety of duties which may be interrupted or changed by immediate circumstances Essential Sensory RequirementsAbility to communicate effectively hear listen speak with patients families health team members referral sources and the community at large Ability to make visual perceptions to evaluate patient and environmental conditions Exposure to inside and outside environmental conditions Work EnvironmentHazardsNormal office conditions Exposure to infectious diseases blood and bodily fluids Job Relationships responsible tofor works with Responsible to the Director of Client and Clinical Services Frequent contact with patients hospital staff physicians representatives of community organizations and contract staff to coordinate provide and evaluate care Other Relevant Requirements Bilingual EnglishSpanish speaking is requiredKnowledge of governmentlegal regulations and requirements related to health care Knowledge of health care delivery trends and implications for clinical specialty and for the medical practice
