You will abstract and code medical information from records of
cancer patients in compliance with the California Cancer Registry
(CCR), Surveillance, Epidemiology and End-Results (SEER),
California Cancer Surveillance Program (CSP) of Los Angeles County,
and the UCLA Cancer Registry, and the Commission on Cancer. This
position has the potential to work remotely. You will:
Abstract clinical and pathological information
Enter information into computerized Cancer Registry database
Assign the appropriate accession/sequence number to each reportable
Assign the appropriate SEER Summary stage, EDO Stage, and TNM
Read and review clinical information and medical record
Obtain and verify clinical information to abstract into the cancer
Abstract treatment information to ensure case completion
Abstract information with a high degree of accuracy (less than 3%
Meet or exceed productivity standards
Review dermatology, pathology, diagnostic indexes, autopsy reports,
death certificates, bone marrow, etc. to determine reportability of
Enter reportable identified cases into Cancer Registry suspension

Prefer 5+ years abstracting experience
Must meet productivity standards and State quality standards
Detailed knowledge of the American College of Surgeon standards,
California Cancer Registry and SEER standards.
Detailed knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, pathology, and

Ability to abstract clinical information from patient records and
code data accurately into Cancer Registry database and follow-up if
additional information is needed.
Excellent organizational skills in maintaining Cancer Data

system that has constantly changing priorities, assignments and

confidentiality of medical information.

expeditiously coordinate follow up procedures.
Ability to work independently and exercise appropriate decisions in
determining follow up actions and complete assignments in a timely

Strong oral and written communication skills for the purposes of
conveying information to individuals at various organizational
