ROLE OVERVIEW:


KARL STORZ is currently seeking a Legal Counsel - Labor & Employment to join the Americas Global Legal Department.

We are seeking an attorney with experience with U.S. multi-state employment law issues. You will report to and assist senior Labor & Employment counsel by providing legal advice and support to the Human Resources (HR) Departments and managing employment disputes, including litigation.

This role is newly created in a relatively new Legal Department and will directly impact the Legal Department's mission, productivity, and strategic priorities. We are looking for a proactive, resourceful, and trustworthy individual with attention to detail who enjoys building relationships and collaborating with business partners at all levels. The ideal candidate will be a problem solver who is comfortable juggling multiple matters on a broad range of subjects, adapting to shifting priorities, using good judgment with sensitive information, driving process improvements, and working with a team.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Key responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Provide counsel and advice to the Company on all employment-related issues, including recruiting, wage and hour compliance, contract or contingent workers, employee relations, performance management, discipline and terminations, internal investigations, reasonable accommodations, leave of absence, work permits, and discrimination.
  • Assist with internal investigations.
  • Assist in developing policies, procedures, and training programs to guide compliance with employment laws.
  • Identify training needs and provide training to managers and relevant departments.
  • Support employment litigation and respond to subpoenas and informal requests for information.
  • Manage and coordinate the Company's response to inquiries and investigations by the Department of Labor, EEOC, or other federal and/or state agencies.
  • Manage and coordinate legal matters handled by outside counsel .
  • Establish and maintain relationships, credibility, and trust with clients, stakeholders, legal team members, and other colleagues.
  • Complete other projects and special assignments as requested by the supervisor and/or Senior Management.

    REQUIREMENTS:

    Our successful candidate will have excellent oral and written business communication skills; be extremely organized; be team-oriented and collaborative; as well as be a proactive and resourceful individual.

    Additional requirements include, but are not limited to:
    • JD from a nationally recognized and accredited U.S. law school
    • 5 years, minimum, as in-house legal counsel (top-tier law firm candidates may be considered) providing substantive labor and employment counseling
    • CA or MA bar license required
    • Ability to do 5-15% overnight domestic and international travel
    • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities and projects with excellent follow-through to meet deadlines
    • Sound judgment, and ability to make and articulate reasoned recommendations
    • Exceptional organizational, analytical, and interpersonal skills
    • Good team player, with the ability to stay calm under pressure
    • Ability to manage heavy workload in a high-pressure environment
    • High level of familiarity with standard office software and the ability to learn new job-related systems and software.
      Preferred but not required:
      • 7+ years of relevant legal experience as a labor and employment attorney
      • Experience in handling labor and employment matters before federal, state courts and administrative agencies
      • Knowledge of Canadian and/or Mexican labor and employment laws
      • Written and spoken German and/or Spanish language business communication skills.
