By providing accessible and fully subsidized medical care, Community Medicine Veterinarians play a crucial role in keeping pets where they belong: safe at home with the person who loves them. Community Medicine provides fully subsidized preventive and primary medical services to LA County's most underserved communities with little to no access to veterinary clinics or other essential pet resources. Community Medicine is a radically unique approach to animal welfare, as our medical staff is encouraged to spend time building trusting relationships with clients and provide referral information for concerns that cannot be addressed in a mobile environment.Position OverviewThe Senior Veterinary Assistant of ASPCA Community Medicine (CM) in Los Angeles is responsible for the daily care of surgery patients and assisting in providing basic and preventative care to pets living in underserved areas and those referred by other ASPCA Departments and agencies. The person in this position assists the CM Veterinarian and Registered Veterinary Technician in the mobile clinic and is responsible for animal handling, patient preparation for surgery, monitoring of surgical patients and for the cleaning/disinfecting and general maintenance of medical equipment. The Senior Veterinary Assistant reports directly to the Medical Staff Manager with a dotted line report to the Assistant Medical Staff Manager, but takes direction and instruction from the Veterinarian and Registered Veterinary Technician regarding medical protocols and patient care.Responsibilities:Medical (60%)Provide excellent patient care in all peri-operative phases.Care for up to 25-30 cats and dogs per day.Be proficient in animal restraint for various procedures (examples: exams, treatments, injections, venipuncture, and intubation).Monitor vital signs of sedated and anesthetized patients in pre-operative, operative, and post-operative phases.Organize and maintain pre-operative area and operating room for patient anesthesia, surgical preparation and sterilization. This includes stocking these areas with necessary supplies.Ensure anesthetic machines, pulse oximeters, scales, and other equipment are functional. When equipment is not working properly, report to Medical Staff Manager/Assistant Medical Staff Manager and Field Lot Coordinator.Clean, sonicate, pack, and sterilize surgical instruments.Clean and disinfect endotracheal tubes.Clean and disinfect kennels, transport carriers, equipment, and facility while utilizing appropriate personal protective equipment.Spot clean operating room, kennels, counters and floors throughout day.Customer Service (30%)Communicate in effective and professional manner with public, fosters and all ASPCA staff members, especially Veterinarians and Registered Veterinary Technicians.Know basic veterinary medical concepts, including, but not limited to vaccine protocols and anesthetic risks. Be able to communicate such information to clients.When Veterinarian has documented information about an animal's condition, appropriately explain such information to clients.Actively promote spay/neuter in the community.Represent ASPCA in a professional and courteous manner at all times.Provide medical information and representation to other ASPCA departments.Administrative/Other (10%)Drive Mobile Clinic to and from different locations throughout LA County. Park at locations appropriately and operate clinic generator.Adhere to all protocols put forth by Occupational Safety and Health Administration.Follow all written and verbally communicated departmental Standard Operating Procedures. One weekend day (Saturday) is required. Position may require flexibility and overtime.This position is based in a mobile vehicle that will be in driven to different locations in the greater Los Angeles area, depending on the need in the community. The person who holds this position must be available to train in New York City when necessary and to travel to New York City as needed for the operation of the ASPCA Community Medicine Department Los Angeles.Must provide a valid driver's license upon hire and pass a motor vehicle history check demonstrating a safe driving history. As part of the driving requirements of this role, must also pass a Department of Transportation Medical Exam.Able to occasionally work in physically challenging conditions and wear appropriate protective gear. Potential environmental factors include:Exposure to biological hazards, such as feces and bloodExposure to sharp objectsWorking in constricted spaces with narrow passagewaysWorking in environments that include loud noisesWorking in environments that may have wet, slippery, greasy, oily, dirty surfaces or strong odors, and exposure to fumes, gases and dustQualifications:Ability to maintain open mind regarding changes and be willing to learn, implement, and teach new protocols, Basic computer skills including Microsoft Office, checking online calendar and email., Must be able to drive our 37' Clinics (Training provided by ASPCA), Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds with assistance repeatedly throughout day, Must be able to navigate uneven terrain, bend, climb, reach overhead, kneel, balance, repetitively use hands and work in a stationary position for 10 or more hours to meet the physical requirements of this position., Must have strong interest in animal welfare., Must possess ability to work efficiently and calmly under challenging and stressful conditions., Must possess ability to work independently and as part of team., Must possess excellent animal handling skills, including the ability to lift and move potentially dangerous domestic and non-domesticated animals in stressful conditions., Must possess excellent customer service skills, including strong written and oral communication.Language:English (Required), SpanishEducation and Work Experience:High School Diploma or GED (Required)Our EEO Policy:The ASPCA is an Equal Employment Opportunity employer.
