Do you want to make a difference & be a positive role model? Are you looking for a rewarding and meaningful career opportunity supporting adults with autism or other developmental disabilities? Would you enjoy a career away from a desk and out of the office? Join our team!
STEPis a day support service that helps people with disabilities seek employment. We provide services to over 200 adults in Los Angeles, Orange and Ventura counties. Our goal in STEP is to support our clients in spending their days actively participating in their community and engaging in activities of their choice, while also challenging them to try new things.
We serve adults, ages 18-65, who have a developmental disability, as well as some individuals who have mental health needs. We work with people who have a number of intellectual and/or physical disabilities, such as Autism Spectrum Disorder, Cerebral Palsy, Down Syndrome, etc. Most of the people we support have challenging behaviors, which are often tied to a skills deficit in communication, coping skills, or social ability. We strive to determine the cause of the behavior and assist our participants in finding a more appropriate way to get their needs met, thus reducing their need to use inappropriate behavior. This involves assessing their abilities, strengths, and opportunities for growth, as well as teaching positive skills so they can get their needs met appropriately.
Our clients are served in a 1:1, 1:2, or 1:3 staff to client ratio, depending on their needs. Service is delivered in the community at work sites, community colleges, and other locations in the area where our clients live. Some of our participants also need assistance with daily living skills such as self-care and eating meals. A typical day in the STEP service is 6 hours and begins at a client home or a morning meeting location. Some of our clients are transported by our staff or their parents, and some transport themselves via car or public transportation.
Our Job Coaches work in various settings supporting individuals living with disabilities to access the community. Supported Employment makes it possible for people with varying levels of disabilities such as autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and intellectual disability, to become active, wage-earning members of the workforce by generating positive employment opportunities and providing ongoing support so that they may be successful in the workplace.
