Animal Lab Technician II is responsible for performing the routine
and specialized duties related to the husbandry of the experimental
animals and the sanitation and environmental monitoring of vivarium
facilities and documentation of such. Observes animals for
abnormalities, performs animal care, cage sanitation, room and
general facility sanitation, bar-coding of cage cards and uploading
of data. Prioritizes work assignments and multitasks. Performs Para
veterinary duties as directed by the Clinical Staff. Primary Duties
and Responsibilities --- Responsible for routine and specialized
feeding, watering, handling/restraint and primary enclosure
exchanging for all species and expertise with large species housed
in the vivarium facilities. --- Monitors animal room environments
(temperature, photoperiods, humidity) recording of data and
reporting abnormalities to appropriate individual(s). ---
Responsible for following constantly varying written and verbal (in
English) instructions regarding the provision of a wide variety of
special diets and medicated water to constantly varying populations
of animals and accurately documenting same. --- Operates
cage-washers, autoclave, automatic water bottle fillers and bedding
dispenser. Uses pressure washer and floor scrubber for secondary
enclosure sanitation. --- Provides care for animals that are
immuno-compromised, have known/unknown pathogens or are designated
as biohazardous. --- Responsible for reading, comprehending, and
following a standard operating procedures (SOP's) related to the
numerous biohazardous agents (bacteria, viruses, radiation,
carcinogens, anti-neoplastic agents, etc.) used in various species
in the Vivarium. --- Responsible for reading, comprehending, and
following SOPs specific to husbandry aspects of GLP compliant
research. --- Provides care for animals on GLP studies and
documents such in a Good Laboratory Practices (GLP) compliant
manner. --- Observes and recognizes symptoms of abnormalities
(anorexia, diarrhea, malocclusion, pododermatitis, etc.) in
laboratory animals. Takes appropriate action (hands-on animal
resolution of problem) and/or promptly reports problems to the
appropriate individuals. --- Maintains aspects of animal Clinical
Records (including records for animals used in Good Laboratory
Practices (GLP) compliant research. --- Receives delivered animals,
inspects animals for abnormalities and houses incoming animals.
Observes received animals for health abnormalities and deviations
from expected quantity, sex, age, weight, strain/stock designation
etc. Promptly reports any health concerns or deviations in expected
delivery criteria to appropriate superiors. --- Responsible for
computer literacy at a level which allows for animal receipt
(printing of cage cards), animal transfers, etc., in addition to
knowledge of barcode census and billing system. --- Responsible for
assisting Clinical Staff with new animal conditioning and
treatments. Performs para-veterinary duties as instructed, and
maintains clinical records as required. --- Assists with rodent
breeding programs (noting birth dates, projecting weaning dates,
weaning, sexing, pairing, etc.) ---- Operates department vehicles
as required. --- Responsible for filling in for Animal Care
Coordinator in his/her absence. --- Responsible for independently
identifying additional tasks (other than those assigned) which need
to be performed. --- Performs up to 4 program support projects per
year Department-Specific Responsibilities
Required - High School Diploma/GED -Preferred - Bachelor's Degree
Relevant college degree or coursework in laboratory animal sciences
Work Experience:Requirement - 3 years of Laboratory Animal Science
experience Licensure/Certifications:Laboratory Animal Technician
(LAT) Preferred
