• Responsible and accountable for high quality patient care through implementation of the nursing process including assessment of patient needs (physical, psychosocial, educational), design of a collaborative plan of care, implementation of the plan with appropriate delegation of tasks, coordination of team effort, and evaluation of patient progress towards outcomes
• Monitors patient throughout (before/during/after) the labor
• Monitors contractions and helps patient with breathing techniques
• Performs basic IV and central line skills
• Performs phlebotomy skills
• Administers pain medication as ordered; administers other meds to address specific medical conditions, such as hypertension and diabetes
• Reads fetal monitor & ascertains if there is a problem with baby's heart rate
• Takes and records patient's vital signs, ascertains if problematic
• Checks patient's cervix periodically to monitor progression/lack of dilation
• Contacts anesthesia when/if patient is ready for epidural; contacts delivering physician at appropriate time, ascertains proper time
• Cares for patients on Pitocin, MgSO4 & continuous lumbar epidural
• Ensures patient is in proper position for delivery & all monitoring equipment is functioning properly
• Aids doctor with drapes, gloves, gowns, etc.; hands doctor delivery instruments as needed during birthing process
• Other duties as assignedQualifications and Job Info
  • Minimum of 1-2 years experience as a clinical nurse RN
  • Associates degree in nursing (ADN) required, bachelor's degree preferred
  • 3 or more years of current experience as a Labor and Delivery nurse is preferred
  • Current RN licensure or compact licensure recognized by the Texas Board of Nursing
  • BCLS certification through the AHA
  • ACLS certification through the AHA
  • NRP and IFM required
  • Travel experience a plus
  • Demonstrate the highest level of professionalism when interacting with patients, families, physicians, and hospital staff members.Benefits
