Job Description:

The University of Southern California is seeking applicants and nominations for the full-time position of Vice President for Health Sciences Advancement. This position reports jointly to the Senior Vice President for University Advancement, the Dean of the Keck School of Medicine of USC, and Senior Vice President and Chief Executive Officer for Keck Medicine of USC to generate support for the academic, research, and clinical missions and priorities of the university's medical enterprise. The Vice President also works with the USC President, Provost, vice presidents, deans, directors, faculty, and staff across the university to advance the university's academic vision and to expand and enhance the university's positive impact on the community and world. The Vice President for Health Sciences Advancement serves as a member of the Senior Vice President for University Advancement's senior leadership team. Duties include: 1) Assists in the planning and strategy of the overall University Advancement operation and its individual program areas related to Health Sciences. 2) Serves as a cultivation and solicitation partner for the Senior Vice President, vice presidents and members of the senior administration, trustees, and volunteers as appropriate. 3) Manages senior leaders who are responsible for a comprehensive suite of advancement programs for the medical enterprise. 4) Indirectly manages a portfolio of principal and major gift prospects and regional advancement offices through executive directors of development and their subordinates. 5) Works with the Senior Vice President and University Advancement senior staff to develop program goals, plans, and objectives, and to establish quantifiable, measurable elements for use in monitoring program effectiveness and success, including implementation and guidance in establishing and maintaining advancement best practices. Goals will include financial targets, prospect contact and activity, reporting, and other analysis to aid in fundraising success for each unit managed by the Vice President for Health Sciences Advancement and for the university overall. 6) Works with the University Advancement senior staff to manage and/or direct all benchmark reporting efforts of Health Sciences advancement. 7) Assists the Senior Vice President in establishing, interpreting, and implementing policies and procedures. 8) Maintains a working knowledge of the university's priorities and fundraising practices and policies, and works with the Senior Vice President to ensure that priorities are achieved. 9) Determines and recommends to the Senior Vice President decisions that need to be made concerning oversight and direction of special projects presented to University Advancement. These decisions will include whether the special project aligns with the goals of the university, necessary strategies and resources for the project, and consequences of the decision to support the project. 10) Represents the Senior Vice President and Division of University Advancement, as well as the University of Southern California, when necessary and appropriate. 11) Collaborates with the USC Alumni Association. 12) Serves on university, college, and campus committees as requested. 13) Assists the Senior Vice President in varied duties, especially as related to advancement planning and activities. Candidates must have a minimum of a bachelor's degree and at least ten years of progressively responsible fundraising and leadership experience in a complex university setting with an academic medical center. Candidate must demonstrate a successful record of designing and implementing leadership and major gift programs, with a minimum of five years of management experience. Proven record of accomplishment in areas of leadership solicitation, board management, fundraising strategy, grateful patient solicitation, and programming is required. Additionally, successful candidates will demonstrate a successful record of designing and implementing leadership and major gift programs, optimizing advancement program effectiveness, and closing seven- and eight-figure gifts. Also required: exceptional problem-solving skills combined with a proven track record for the execution of plans and strategies; experience collaborating in a team-oriented environment; excellent interpersonal, relationship-building, and communication skills; and impeccable integrity. Demonstrated ability to create collaborative opportunities between advancement, marketing/communications, and alumni relations a plus. Travel is required. Candidates with a master's degree and experience in capital campaigns are preferred. This is a full-time, 12-month professional position. Salary is commensurate based on qualifications.
