Overview

Position Summary

The Assistant Camp Director supports the Camp Director and oversees the development of camp staff. They will be responsible for assisting in the day-to-day operations of camp, overall management of staff and camper safety, and the facilitation of camp activities to ensure a safe, educational, and fun camp environment.

    GSGLA La Casita Day Camp

    La Casita, a beautiful and historic camp cherished by generations of Girl Scouts, is nestled peacefully in the hillsides above Claremont. Adjacent to the Claremont Hills Wilderness Park, it is home to fascinating native plants and animals. There is no better place for girls to step away from the urban hustle and bustle and learn about the natural world and how humans can protect it.

    Essential Duties & Responsibilities

    1. Develop and deliver an activity program that is appropriate for the age and ability of the campers.
  • Create and help facilitate curriculum for each uniquely themed week of camp.
  • Apply basic youth development principles in working with campers through communication, relationship development, respect for diversity, involvement, and empowerment of youth.
  • Assure campers are always properly supervised.
  • Be aware of and implement safety guidelines.
    2. Ensure that camp staff and campers know and follow safety and educational procedures.
  • Assist in the implementation of staff training for specific activity area.
  • Train other staff in their responsibilities during activities.
  • Ensure campers and staff follow safety procedures.
  • Assist counselors with the development of activity kits for use by units and for special events.
    3. Assist in the management and care of the physical facilities and equipment in activity area.
  • Maintain and clean activity equipment and activity area, keeping it free of hazards and debris.
  • Ensure that equipment and supplies are secure.
  • Conduct a daily check of the area and equipment for safety, cleanliness, and good repair.
    3. Be a role model to campers and staff in your attitude and behavior.
  • Follow and uphold all safety and security rules and procedures.
  • Set a good example to campers and others regarding general camp procedures and practices including sanitation, schedule, and sportsmanship.
    4. Participate as a member of the camp staff team to deliver and supervise evening programs, special events, and other all-camp activities and camp functions.
  • Attend and prepare for daily meetings.
  • Assist where needed on camper check-in and check-out
  • Be a unit liaison, checking in on units to ensure they have everything they need throughout the day.
    5. Other duties as assigned.

    Skills/ Experience/ Other

    Qualifications (Minimum Education and Experience)
    • Must be 18 years of age or a High School Graduate by the start of camp
    • Must be available for 9 weeks of day camp and training dates that will be scheduled before camp.
    • Documented experience teaching or interacting with youth programs
    • Must submit health history form prior to first day of work.
      • Must be committed to work the entire camp season and attend all pre-camp trainings.
      • Must hold a valid CPR/First Aid Certification by the start of camp. Training will be available.

        Additional Organizational Requirements
        • Subscribe to the principles of the Girl Scout Movement.
        • Demonstrate a strong work ethic, integrity, and honesty in all professional situations.
        • Possess a positive attitude with strong work ethic, integrity. honesty, and sense of humor.
        • Must be flexible, adaptable and willing to thrive in an ever changing/fast-paced environment
        • Develop and maintain sensitivity to employee diversity in the workplace.
        • Behave in ways that demonstrate respectful treatment of other employees, volunteers and girls.
        • Practice pluralism and be inclusive with the services provided.
        • Compliance with State-mandated reporter requirements is an essential function of this position.
        • Attend GSGLA signature events and certain other activities/events (including cookie cupboards, etc.) as assigned.
        • Abide by a duty of loyalty to GSGLA and give preference to the business and mission of GSGLA over that of other organizations and your own business interests.

          Physical Requirements
          • The incumbent must have the ability to visually monitor and physically assist campers weighing up to 200 lbs.
          • The incumbent must be able to perform this job safely, without endangering the health or safety of him/herself or others.
          • The incumbent must possess endurance including prolonged standing, some bending, stooping, and stretching.
          • The camp operates with daily exposure to various weather conditions and animals such as bugs, raccoons, and other wilderness animals common to the area.
