About the Team:

The Product Design organization at Crunchyroll is a distributed team responsible for the design of the Crunchyroll services on desktop, tablet, mobile, and TV devices. Our goal is a consistent and seamless user experience across all these platforms.

As a complement to business, product, and engineering, we collaborate closely with teams across the organization to identify the right problems to solve and ensure that our solutions satisfy the goals of both the business and the end user. We are a distributed team with designers in San Francisco, LA, Dallas and Moldova.

About the Role:

As a Product Design Director, you will develop and grow the US Product Design team. You will work closely with design leadership to drive initiatives around process, communication, collaboration, and tools. You will provide mentorship to other team members through review, feedback, and coaching. You will represent the Product Design team and build a strong and healthy relationship with other departments. You will manage and improve the tools, processes, and collaboration between Product Design and Engineering teams. You will also do hands-on design as required.

About You:

Bachelor's degree in Graphic Design / Interaction Design / New Media / Fine Arts or equivalent experience
5+ years of managing designers
Excellent leadership and organizational skills
Strong leadership, mentorship and coaching skills
Experience working closely with cross-functional teams of designers, engineers, product managers, and researchers
Ability to clearly articulate design decisions and what problems they're solving with stakeholders at different levels
Comfortable managing a wide range of responsibilities at the same time
Positive, open-minded, with a desire to collaborate and learn
Ability to work under pressure and to tight deadlines while maintaining a positive and constructive attitude
Strong portfolio showcasing design work as well as your design process
A user-centered approach to designing software and services for people
Understanding and up to date experience with modern application technologies, including responsive web, native iOS/Android app design, and TV design
Experience working with and chipping in to design systems, guidelines, and other standard methodologies
Expert skills in modern design programs like Sketch and Adobe Creative Suite
Experience working in an Agile development environment and using Jira and Confluence
Excellent interpersonal skills, including written and verbal communication
Ability to define priorities, set goals, and articulate vision and strategy


Interest in anime, pop culture, animation, video games, tech and geekdom
Knowledge of the online video streaming space
Experience designing for global products
Worked with or led design teams in other geographies
Copywriting experience
HTML/CSS/JavaScript/React knowledge

A day in the life of our Product Design Director:

Mentor and support the US Product Design team. Provide meaningful opportunities, advice, and guidance to help them constantly improve and reach their long-term goals.
Work closely with design and product leadership to ensure the design department meets business objectives, achieves OKRs, and delivers high quality work at a repeatable cadence.
Balance business objectives with user and team needs. Represent all sides and create the best outcomes for each.
Create a culture that promotes essential team values, healthy collaboration and shared ownership between design, product, and engineering teams.
Help create and refine tools, systems, and processes that improve design quality, speed, and collaboration.
Document the processes and best practices and make sure the department follows them.
Provide insightful and actionable feedback that improves the quality of design work.
Work with our User Research Team and Interaction Designers to create prototypes, test new and existing product features, and iterate on them.
Communicate effectively across all levels of the organization -- from individual contributors to executive staff as an advocate of the global product design team.
May own the product design of multiple features from end to end.
May lead large scale features that require complex interactions and the creation of new design system elements.
Hire, develop, and lead an engaged and impactful product design team.
Take feedback and continuously improve yourself as a design leader.
