Business Development Manager or Supervisor - Global Human Capital and Compliance Business Development Los Angeles, California San Francisco, California Washington, District of Columbia New York, New York Atlanta, Georgia Houston, Texas Chicago, Illinois King & Spalding, a leading global law firm, seeks a driven and experienced Business Development Manager in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Atlanta, Washington, D.C., New York, Houston or Chicago to serve as the primary business development and marketing support person for our Global Human Capital and Compliance Practice (GHCC) and support select cross-practice initiatives. The candidate will work closely with the partners, as well as with colleagues across the firm's Marketing Department, to help chart business development strategy and drive a range of new business and marketing initiatives. The ideal candidate is forward thinking, energetic and detail oriented, brings substantive knowledge of the related practice areas and at least five years of experience in a comparable role at a law firm or similar professional services environment. Candidates Will Have the Following Responsibilities:

  • Work with BD Leadership, partner leaders, and senior staff to help craft and execute a range of go-to-market strategies
  • Organize and drive client targeting program for supported areas, including prompting and monitoring pursuit activities, and tracking results and ROI
  • Conduct strategic research on potential clients, competitors and practice developments more broadly to identify business trends and opportunities and ensure that K&S is optimally positioned to grow market share
  • Collaborate with BD colleagues and others to connect dots within the firm and capitalize on cross-team/cross-geography opportunities
  • Draft materials and play a coordinating role in connection with pitches, RFPs and other new business opportunities
  • Craft and update marketing materials for GHCC, including website content, brochures, lawyer biographies, at-a-glance documents, etc.
  • Identify and facilitate K&S participation in sponsorships, conferences, memberships and other key profile-building opportunities
  • Coordinate team partner meetings (including planning agendas) and facilitate internal communications and knowledge sharing
  • Coordinate firm-hosted business development events, including receptions, client entertainment outings, substantive presentations, webcasts, etc., working closely with participating lawyers and Marketing Dept. colleagues on invitation list development, event materials, participant tracking, on-site management and targeted follow-up activities
  • Manage legal directory and league ranking submissions, and assist the PR team in the generation of matters and other information for awards submissions
  • Oversee the upkeep and compilation of matter lists for GHCC
  • Manage the maintenance of client and target contact and mailing lists
  • Compile periodic reports on business development activity and results for GHCC
  • Assist with vetting big-ticket budget requests and analyzing marketing expenses and effectiveness thereof
  • Serve as the primary contact for GHCC's business development and marketing requests Candidates must have strong oral and written communication skills. Successful candidates will be highly intelligent, proactive and have a business-minded approach to all responsibilities and initiatives. The Business Development Manager must also:
    • possess a professional, yet approachable, demeanor, with comfort and competence both in dealing with senior lawyers and working collaboratively with other lawyers and staff throughout the firm
    • have excellent project management skills, with keen attention to detail and an ability to prioritize and execute multiple ongoing tasks often under tight deadlines.
    • be proficient in the use of a variety of applications such as, but not limited to, PowerPoint, Word, Excel, website CRM platforms and Interaction (or other CRM databases) -- facility with HTML and graphic design applications is beneficial but not required. An undergraduate degree is required. JD or MBA is preferred.
