Job Description:
Position Information Reporting to the Skilled Crafts Trades
Supervisor in the Facilities Services Maintenance department, the
Carpenter performs journey-level work related to the construction,
repair, restoration, and installation of building structures and
fixtures, furniture, shelving, cabinetry, drywall, and rough and
finish work. Constructs partition walls, including setting of jams,
doors, and hardware installation. Repairs and installs drywall and
ceiling tiles. Designs, fabricates, installs and repairs cabinets,
solid surface tops, and plastic laminates or wood veneers. Cuts and
installs glass windows and mirrors, wood and metal doors, frames
(wood and metal studs), refits doors, repairs ceramic wall and
floor tiles, and makes repairs to various types of flooring and
wall bases. Constructs and sets forms for concrete, finishes
concrete, and makes repairs to broken concrete. Performs post and
beam construction; builds, constructs, repairs, and installs
stairs, decks, porches, wood fencing, and siding, etc. Performs
building layout and demolition, as needed. Maintains clear and
accurate documentation of all inspections, testing and maintenance
(corrective and/or preventative) performed. Updates equipment
documentation, specifications and drawings, as needed. Reviews and
updates all shop logs, both paper and electronic according to
updates and changes. Responds to emergency situations to mitigate
and/or resolve immediate concerns or safety issues. Responds to
emergency situations during or after hours for the purposes of
resolving immediate safety concerns. Maintains a positive attitude
and communicates effectively with colleagues, supervisors, staff,
faculty and students. Performs all job duties in adherence with
University and departmental safety guidelines. The full salary
range for the Carpenter is $41.67 - $46.92 per hour. We base salary
offers on a variety of considerations, such as education, licensure
and certifications, experience, and other business and
organizational needs. Applicants must have current work
authorization when accepting a UCR staff position. Currently, we
are unable to sponsor or take over sponsorship of an employment
Visa for staff. As a University employee, you will be required to

bargaining agreements, as may be amended from time to time.
Federal, state, or local government directives may impose
additional requirements. Education Education Requirements High
School Diploma. (Preferred) License Requirements Valid Driver
License. (Required) Certification Requirements Completion of a
certified apprenticeship program. (Preferred) Experience
Requirements 4 years of journey-level experience as a carpenter
performing specialized fine carpentry, furniture/cabinet making,
framing, wood working and joinery, and/or completion of a certified
apprenticeship training; or an equivalent combination of education,
training and experience. (Required) Minimum Requirements Skilled
use and maintaining of carpentry tools and test equipment such as
manual and air hammers, compressors, drills, saws, concrete cutter,
sanders, lathes, joiners, shapers, planers, etc. Ability to
communicate and work effectively with co-workers, supervisors, and
the general public, and provide exceptional customer service.
Ability to prioritize work orders, routine work, emergency requests
and ability to choose the proper materials or equipment to
accomplish work in the most expeditious and safe manner and record
information accurately as is necessary to perform the job
responsibilities. Knowledge and ability to prepare layouts, build,
and install building structures, set forms, fabricate, repair and
install cabinetry, and perform post and beam construction, and all
facets of rough and finish work. Knowledge of the Uniform Building
Code, Industrial Safety Standards, code procedures. Willingness and
ability to work weekends and holidays. Ability to work occasional
scheduled and unscheduled overtime, emergency call-back, and a
flexible schedule as needed. Ability to read, write and perform
basic arithmetic calculations. Ability to follow verbal and written
instructions. Knowledge of proper handling procedures of asbestos,
mold, and lead paint. Ability to interpret documents such as
complex technical procedures, instructions, manuals,
specifications, blueprints and diagrams. Ability to withstand
frequent exposure to extreme temperature conditions up to 125
degrees F (boiler rooms, steam pits, outdoor weather, etc.).
Ability to work in confined and dusty spaces while wearing
respirator or other required safety gear. Ability to work outdoors
in extreme and inclement weather conditions ranging from high heat
with humidity, to freezing, rainy, and windy conditions. Ability to
work around and be exposed to unpleasant sights and smells,
dangerous and/or hazardous substances. Ability and skill in
estimating time, methods, and materials needed from construction
documents, and ability to prepare accurate estimates. Ability to
work from varying heights of up to 25 feet above grade; ability to
lift up to 75 pounds; ability to perform repetitive lifting,
stooping, kneeling, pushing, pulling and reaching. Ability to lift,
load, carry, move and manipulate various building materials;
Ability to utilize approprate safety devices, equipment and gear to
safely perform physical requirements and duties. Preferred
Qualifications Basic knowledge and technical skills with computer
programs and applications (i.e. Microsoft Word, Excel, Design Cad
2, etc.). Knowledge of UC/UCR policies and systems. Ability to work
with a diverse student, staff, faculty, and visitor population and
ability to provide exemplary customer service. Additional
