High School Photography & Photography Advanced, Long Term
Substitute
Dates: August 23, 2023 - October 6, 2023
Responsibilities include the following:
Photography: In this year-long introduction to photography,
students will learn the fundamentals of making photographs using
the black-and-white darkroom. The curriculum includes how to
operate a 35mm single lens reflex camera, process film, make
contact sheets and enlargements. In addition, students will learn
the language of photography through the study of various visual
elements including composition, light, and form. This vocabulary
will be used in class discussion, research, presentation, and
written assignments. Additionally, students will gain experience in
critical discourse through group critique. As our world is now
saturated with images, the study of both contemporary and
historical photographers will place the medium of photography
within a larger cultural context. Photographic assignments are
designed to help students learn something specific about camera
operation, darkroom technique, and the visual language of
photographs. Example assignments include: mood, portraiture,
self-portraiture, landscape, and narrative. Within the parameters
of each project, students are encouraged to photograph what
intrigues them most. By the end of the course, students will
develop a portfolio of work that spans varied subject matter, all
of which is important to them. (Grades 9-12)
Photography Advanced: In this semester course, students pursue
their study of photography on an individualized basis with a focus
on each student finding their voice as a photographer. S1 is
dedicated to digital photography and color printing while S2 is
focused on advanced film and darkroom technique in black-and-white.
Through open-ended prompts, students may choose their own subjects
and design their own projects. In addition to expanding their
vision as photographers, students will learn more in-depth camera
operation and exposure techniques, lighting, use of Adobe Creative
Suite, digital printing, and darkroom printing on large paper. In
the search of finding their personal vision, students will
investigate various aspects of the history of photography and its
traditions, collect inspiration in sketchbooks, and refine their
skills in analyzing photographs. By the end of the course, students
will have developed a new body of work along with a written artist
statement. (Grades 10-12; one semester; prerequisite:
Photography)
