Lead Strategic Designer (The Boston Consulting Group, Inc. -
Manhattan Beach, California): Leverage design-thinking and industrial
design methodologies to help re-imagine new human-centered user
experiences, digital products, and services through collaborative problem
solving with a multidisciplinary team. Duties include: facilitate ethnographic
research and the delivery of human-centered designs to develop physical
and digital products; serve as a key contributor in the areas of Conceptual
Ideation, Trend Analysis, 2-D/3-D Concept Development, Material Selection,
and Tech Pack Creation; conduct research on usage behaviors, identify
areas of friction or gaps in current digital solutions, perform product
testing, and execute focus group studies to understand user reactions to
potential innovations; apply knowledge of visual theory, industrial
design, branding, color theory, materials, finishes, sustainability analyses, and
product construction techniques to the design and development of new
digital products; apply knowledge of 2-D Analog Visual Communication,
Adobe Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, In-Design), 3-D Analog Prototyping,
SolidWorks, and Rapid Prototyping Procurement; contribute to the firm’s
thought leadership in User-Centered design approaches and strategic
innovation practices; navigate multidisciplinary input and constructive
critique to ensure that our digital products offer both a compelling visual
design and a great consumer experience; share accountability for project
strategy, development and commercialization, and work with and contribute
to the overall strategy team to understand market needs and priorities,
required positioning, key economics, product requirements and
differentiated value propositions of new products and services; and apply
hypothesis-driven problem solving and creative ideation to surface disruptive
ideas with commercial impact and define business models and commercial
go-to-market strategy. Will supervise 4 - 5 junior Strategic Designers.
Requires a Master's degree in Industrial Design, Product Design, or related
field (willing to accept foreign education equivalent) plus five (5)
years of experience performing concept development, product design, trend
mapping, and ethnographic research with at least two (2) years of
experience as a design strategy director or manager or, alternatively, a
Bachelor's degree and seven (7) years of experience performing concept
development, product design, trend mapping, and ethnographic research with at least
two (2) years of experience as a design strategy director or manager.
Specific skills/other requirements (quantitative experience requirements
not applicable to this section) – must have proficiency in the
following: 2-D Analog Visual Communication (e.g. sketching and storyboarding);
2-D Digital Visual Communication (e.g. infographics and basic wireframes);
3-D Analog Model-Making (e.g. foam, clay, and mockups) & Rapid Prototyping;
3-D software including SolidWorks and Rhino; Adobe Creative Suite
(Photoshop, Illustrator, In-Design, Acrobat); and Prototyping Vendor
Management & Procurement. Travel required (20%) based on company/client need.
